Fun On The Farm

A favorite past time of ours in the spring was to go crawfishing. All of us who lived on the farm had a pond in the back pasture, known to Cajuns as "vivier" or "marais". Many of us also lived along or near "the woods" where there were many bayous and coulees. The crawfish in the spring were plentiful. Of course, commercial crawfishing was unknown. You could not buy crawfish. My mother would cut pieces of fat meat or bacon and tie each piece with short strings to sticks . Early in the morning was a great time to go crawfishing. I remember it was so much fun that we would literally spend the whole day out in the woods. Our catch was then boiled. Mom would give us a few boiled ones to eat. With the rest she would make a gumbo or fricassee. Mom knew how to please us.
